Lessons from the gym on grit and patience

12 lessons gym has taught me:

  1. The world is watching you. They look closely to see if you have the grit or not. Your stubbornness will attract or repel them. Be calm and slow. Walk like you own everything and do not care.
  2. There’s no set as the first set. You decide a weight and hammer 5 same rounds straight. That’s how you lift metal. Anything else is ego or too shallow.
  3. Music is great but most times you have to hear your heart pound. When you’d feel your beat at 150 bpm, you’d realise how alive you are. Use blockers.
  4. Leg day builds character. People would hate you for your guts at the intensity with which you train your legs. It is the road less taken.
  5. Protein is key but don’t count. Have a rough idea but never micromanage nutrition. You do it for the fun, not to become an alchemist.
  6. Life is about being calm. Your task list should dictate your mood. Work hard and train harder. Anger is for the weak, do it for the fun.
  7. 1 more rep. Mindset should be to marginally better. 5 reps on a 10 rep count is 50% more. Be smarter mathematically.
  8. Gym is therapy. Drop work, ego, anger & calls at the door and walk with just one thought, train hard.
  9. A fuller stomach and a weary body, calms the mind.
  10. Grit beats everything.
  11. Time is supreme and consistent. Understand the laws of time. Wishful thinking doesn’t work on time.
  12. Read 11 again.
